Commissioned by Mark M. for hiw wife, Irene, on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary.
Irene: Sunshine of my Heart. for Piano quintet.
A tribute to three Romantic composers.

This piece is a tribute to the great piano concerto composers: Brahms, Chopin, and Rachmaninoff. The first movement contains the moodiness of Brahms, at one moment joyful, at the next, extremely profound. The second movement is a moving and sensual nocturne, similar to Chopin's. The last movement is a homage to Rachmaninoff. It is bright, and bursting with energy.
Time: 14'50"

Virtuoso piano part.
More of a piano concerto than a quintet, Irene: Sunshine of My Heart has many striking passages and moments of dazzling fingerwork that highlight the pianist's mastery of the keyboard. From flowing arpeggios up and down the keys to thick rolling chords and complex sequences, this piece is both a challenge and a pleasure to play.

Irene: Sunshine of My Heart is arranged for 2 violins, viola, cello, and piano. It has also been arranged for piano and string orchestra.

Performance Options.
The second movement, Nocturne, can be used as a standalone piece at 4'00" in length. The piano part is less virtuosic in this movement.

Programming ideas.
Irene: Sunshine of My Heart works well in fall or spring concerts. When played as a piano quintet, it couples well with the string quartets of Brahms or Beethoven. When played with string orchestra, it can be used as a piano concerto alongside the piano concertos of Rachmaninoff, Brahms, and Chopin. It bridges between the works of Chopin, Brahms, and Rachmaninoff.

Composer's Note.
"Irene: Sunshine of My Heart was commissioned by Mark M. for his wife, Irene, on the occasion of their 20th wedding anniversary. The idea for the the piece's movements came from a nickname for Irene, "Sunshine." The piece opens with a slow introduction presenting Irene's name spelled with musical letters. The first movement describes the bright and vivacious nature of midday. The second movement is a nocturne which portrays the night as mysterious and romantic; the sun's presence still remains in the radiance of the moon. The third movement begins with the first rays of the sun, the beginning of the new day."
